Here’s a couple whose relationship has definitely withstood the test of time — marriage can be hard work, but clearly these two have totally figured it out. They’ve been married for more than 60 years and have both lived very long and happy lives. We’re talking about actor Kirk Douglas, who turns 102 this year, and his wife of 62 years, Anne Buydens, who is 99 years old. That’s quite a life together!
What’s the secret to their long-lasting marriage? They’ve obviously stuck through it all, good times and bad, raising their blended family, and seeing their relationship through into the twilight years.
Kirk and Anne met when he was working on location in Paris, France for the film Lust for Life. Anne was a producer on the movie and it was love at first sight for the two. Anne fell for the dashing leading man and they were married shortly after on May 29, 1954.
In a 2017 interview with USA Today, the couple talked about their long marriage, while discussing the book they wrote together, Kirk and Anne: Letters of Love, Laughter, and a Lifetime in Hollywood and he recalled trying to ask her out on a date.
“She was the most difficult woman I ever met,” he explained, adding, “I mean… I was a big movie star and I invited her to dinner” and she declined!
During the interview, Anne also shared one of the beloved husband’s downfalls, but they had a laugh over it, as she noted: You can’t tell him anything. He tells everybody.”
Kirk had two sons, Michael and Joel, from his first marriage to Diana Dill, and then he and Anne had two children together, Peter and Eric.
The actor is not only well-known for his movie roles, but Anne and Kirk worked tirelessly as philanthropists and goodwill ambassadors for the U.S. Information Agency, spreading the message of peace and love to countries around the world.
The work they did was important, but their family is near and dear to them. Earlier this year, the couple met their great-granddaughter and the images melted everyone’s hearts.
Cameron Douglas, Michael Douglas’ son, and his girlfriend, Viviane Thibes, welcomed a baby girl, who they named Lua Izzy in December 2017.
Cameron made the announcement on Instagram, noting: “Today my appreciation for mothers all over the world has reached new heights… today I took part in a miracle as my baby girl was introduced to the world through a beautiful Amazon warrior… I’m so proud of you @vivianethibes.”
In January, he posted a photo of Kirk holding little Lua, captioning the sweet moment: “Words cannot express… #Powerful #Bloodline.”
Then, in August, Cameron posted a photo of Kirk and his great-granddaughter sharing a moment, as she is seen looking up at the legend sitting in a chair, reaching for his hand. Cameron captioned it, simply enough, “LOVE.”
Cameron and Vivian’s middle name choice for their daughter is a tribute to Kirk, who was born Issur Danielovitch and later went by Izzy.
Kirk and Anne are definitely a perfect match, but their love for their family is undeniable.
