When We Saw This Animal Walking Up To Us, We Didn’t Know If It Was Real Or Not

In what appears to be a very timely event, a rare white reindeer emerged from the woods in Norway, just in time for Christmas. As luck would have it, someone was there to capture the moment that the white reindeer, accompanied by his brown mother, was in the middle of a snowy field. As the pictures portray, the deer seemed all too happy to be posing for the photos, standing proudly for the camera.

Many people were confused by the odd color of the deer, and many thought he was albino, however; the solid white color is due to a rare genetic mutation that strips the fur of pigment. And while this was quite the sight, it turns out that the lucky deer may lead to luck. The indigenous Sami people, who reside in an area that stretches across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, believe that a white reindeer is a sign of good luck.

Because calves are born in May each year, this little guy would’ve only been a few months old, still innocent enough to not fear humans.

Mads Nordsveen is the photographer responsible for capturing the adorable photos of the white deer, and lucky for us, he just happened to be on a hiking trip with friends when he spotted the rare creature.

“I was walking in the mountains looking for nice landscapes for my travel photography when out of nowhere I saw this wonderful little creature,” Nordsveen said.

In the photos, the white deer appears to be brave as he comes right up to the camera, while his mother stands in the background. To add to the cuteness, he has a little smattering of white snow on his nose.

Nordsveen recalled the moment he met the reindeer…

“He came very close to me and we looked at each other straight in the eyes. He was quite relaxed when he saw that I was calm and friendly. It was almost as if he posed for the camera. He was very curious and fun, like a little explorer. After some minutes, the mother came out from some trees behind the white reindeer. It walked around for a bit before running back to its mother. It was very magical and a fairy tale moment.”

Timing happened to be everything when Nordsveen decided to head out and take landscape photos. Little did he know, he would experience a once in a lifetime opportunity and he is thanking his lucky stars that he had his camera on him and the reindeer was so brave about being photographed. Maybe the Sami people are onto something and white reindeer really are a sign of good luck.

Commenters were in awe of the stunning creature….

“Magnificent and very cute!”

“Feeling Christmas already! Cute creature and blends so perfectly with the snowy background.”

“Oh, he is gorgeous, full of curiosity and playfulness.”

One commenter added some humor…

“Gorgeous but no red nose.”

In some sense, this sighting was a bit of a Christmas miracle, at least for Nordsveen who got to see the reindeer up close and personal.
